Culture of Life Programs

Goals for this fraternal yearA People of Life and For Life
The Knights of Columbus remains firmly committed to defending the right to life of every human being, from the moment of conception to natural death. Countless councils and individual Knights conduct projects aimed to build a culture of life in their individual communities. One of the most successful of the Orderís initiatives in this area is the Ultrasound Initiative though which councils (both state and local) partner with the Supreme Council in provide sharing the cost of purchasing ultrasound machines for pregnancy resource centers.
What we choose to do, or not do, about abortion, euthanasia, human cloning and embryonic research impacts lives for generations to come. Take action now and support a culture that values human life at all stages.
Program directors do a terrific job in developing and bringing quality programs to our members and parishioners. But they can't do it alone. If you have any ideas for future programs/events or would like to help in some capacity, please contact the director at the following address.
March For Life
Posted by: Lew CabralThe 40th annual march for life took place in Washington, DC with 44 parishioners from st. John's in attendance. This was estimated to be the largest crowd ever with of over 600,000 pro- lifers, of which 75% were youth.
When we arrived at the march we gathered along with other parishioners from the diocese of Richmond in our yellow scarves for pictures on the steps of the natural history museum. Marching along with the throng of signs and banners, priests, nuns, and other religious groups, people just kept coming from every direction.
It was heartwarming and comforting to know that the importance of life, in all of its forms from conception to natural death was embraced fully for all the right reasons!

Charitable Giving Reminder
Posted by: Lew CabralDear pro life advocates,
As you plan your year end charitable giving please consider a tax deductible gift to save lives and souls.
The Tidewater Knights of Columbus councils are again starting an ultrasound machine fund raising initiative. We will collect funds for the acquisition of a machine for our local Keim Crisis Pregnancy Centers (CPCs) as well as raise funds to permit ongoing operating costs of existing and new machines.
As you know our Crisis Pregnancy centers in Virginia Beach, Norfolk, and Newport News have ultrasound machines but the state of the economy has negatively impacted donations for ongoing operation of these life saving medical services. As you send your checks to your parish KofC council's ultrasound fund (or to Father Habets council 4632 if you don't have a parish council) realize that every dollar donated toward a new machine will be matched by our National KofC Supreme council and funds given for operating of existing machines will be put to work immediately as matching funds for continuing operations.
A typical pregnancy ultrasound exam can cost a young mother up to $300 but are free at our CPCs because this gift may cause her to realize a distinct living human grows within her and encourages her to embrace the life of her child.
The real cost of a single exam is less than $50! So donations large and small can save lives and souls!
Please indicate on your donation if the funds you are donating are for a new machine, existing operation or both. Donations sent to KofC Father Habets council will receive a thank you letter for your tax files.
Wishing you a very merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year!
God bless you one and all!

40 Days for Life40 Days for Life is an international campaign of prayer and fasting held twice yearly to combat abortion. It combines three things: 40 days of prayer and fasting, daily peaceful vigil at an abortion facility, and community outreach. Over 150 cities are holding a campaign this fall that will run from Sept 22 to Oct 31. There have been wonderful results from this campaign - since 2007, over 2000 babies have been saved from abortion; 6 abortion mills have closed down; and 35 abortion workers have quit their jobs. Our local campaign will be at the new mega Planned Parenthood at 515 Newtown Rd, in Va Beach. For more information call Lew or Mary Cabral.
Respect for LifeRespect Life Committee meets once a month from September thru May on the first Wednesday of the month at 7:00pm in the school library. Contact Mary or Lew Cabral.
Held on Virginia Beach Blvd. and Independence on Oct. 10th (Respect Life Sunday) from 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm. Life Chain is a one hour, nationwide time of prayer and public witness where Christians gather to stand along a public thoroughfare (Virginia Beach Blvd. and Independence.) We join with area churches as we prayerfuuly stand together for life, holding signs and proclaim the truth about abortion. We will stand with over 800 cities nationwide to uphold God's truth in our communities.
The Banquet is held each year at the Chesapeake Convention Center with over 1,200 people attending. This annual event is sponsored by different groups and churches, St. John's was a sponsor last year for a table for 10 people. There is no charge to attend the banquet, but people are encourage to leave a donation afterward. This is a wonderful evening with great food, wonderful guest speakers delivering the message that there is help available for all women in a crisis pregnancy situation. Last year there were people who couldn't get in because the hall was filled to capacity, each year word of mouth makes this an event people do not want to miss.
The mission of Crisis Pregnancy is to defend life by supporting women and teens unprepared for pregnancy, bringing healing and wholeness to lives traumatized by abortion, and influecing and persuading those around us to follow Jesus Christ.
If anyone would like to be a table host, to invite 10 people to attend, or if anyone would just like to attend please call Mary or Lew Cabral for more information.
The Catholic Church teaches us that we are to respect life from the moment of conception to natural death. "Every person - no matter how vulnerable or helpless, no mtter how young or how old, no matter how healthy, handicapped or sick, no matter how useful or productive for society -- is a being of inestimable worth, created in the image and likeness of God." Pope John Paul II
